Récif artificiel

Récif artificiel, india ink on nautical chart of the Riviera, 75 x 110 cm, 2024

A monumental structure—a sort of temple for homeless fish.

Unique work

Description

Over a nautical chart of the Mediterranean Sea, stretching from Monaco to San Lorenzo, I have drawn an artificial reef—a kind of social housing block for fish. This 3D-printed concrete structure is intended to serve as a habitat for marine creatures following the destruction of their ecosystem.
The monumental brutalism of this structure, composed of multiple cells, is reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s standardized architectures, but this time destined for the marine world. Submerged with great fanfare off the coast of Cap d'Agde, this 103-ton concrete block is part of a dual program of ecology and underwater tourism, and even received an award from the Ministry of Ecology. Even worse than "insect hotels"—another ecological aberration—the artificial reef represents one of the summits of political hypocrisy.
