Description
Two masked, unsettling figures frame a child with a lost gaze. Behind the stark contrast of black ink and aged paper — amid the shadows and fragments of text from a book titled The Science of Happiness — emerges a disturbing vision of childhood. The work wavers between dark fairytale, traumatic memory, and masked theater, allowing a more ambiguous truth to surface beneath its calm veneer.
Each stroke scratches at the supposed sweetness of childhood.
The piece, both narrative and symbolic, evokes rites of passage, childhood fears, and ambiguous figures of authority or protection. It draws from the imagery of fairy tales and folklore (evoking Krampus, the bogeyman…), but also from a more intimate memory.
