Oil Platform

Oil Platform: ink drawing on an original nautical chart, depicting a monumental offshore structure — somewhere between technical engraving and contemporary vanitas.

Encre de Chine sur carte marine, 70 x 103 cm, 2024

Unique work

Description

Œuvre originale, encre de Chine sur carte maritime. (Pièce unique)

This nautical chart of South Africa (Durban to Tugela River area) serves as the backdrop for a meticulous depiction of an offshore oil platform. The Indian ink, applied through cross-hatching and stippling in the manner of old engravings, renders the industrial architecture with near-mechanical precision—while allowing a quiet sense of strangeness to surface.

Black smoke rises slowly, merging with the inverted coastlines of the map — as if the land itself were exhaling a fossil memory. The work stands at the boundary between technical drawing and contemporary allegory — a reminder of our dependence on fossil energy, inscribed directly onto the sea.
